PORTA SARAGOZZA is the start of the scenografic porticos lading up to the santuary of the Madonna di San Luca , on the Guardia Hill.
The portico, winding up for 3,8 Kilometres , is formed of 666 archways many of them supporting living accododation.
After running along a strech of Via Saragozza , the portico bridges the road by means of the Arco del Meloncello, a daring piece of engeneering by Carlo Francesco Dotti.
Flights of steps and terraces lead up to the the sanctuary .
It was designed by Carlo Francesco Dotti in the 1723 , but it was completed only in 1774 by his son Giovanni Giacomo Dotti .
The sacred image of the Madonna , held by popular belif to be work of St. Luke in reality is a 12th century Byzantine icon .
